Interval shooting for the creation of time–lapse movies

Continuous shooting with a set interval between 1 and 60 seconds is now available within the camera, and the resulting still images can be edited into a time–lapse movie on a PC using the Viewer23 application from the Imaging EdgeTMdesktop applications. A simple variable–speed preview function allows you to see an image on the camera of how the finished movie will look.

180 °–tiltable LCD screen with versatile touch functions

The high–resolution 921k–dot LCD has a 3.0–type screen and tilts up a full 180 ° for easy framing of self–portraits and vlogs. The LCD's intuitive touch operations include Touch Pad (smoothly move the focus point), Touch Focus (set the focus point), Touch Shutter (release the shutter), and Touch Tracking (activate Real–Time AF).

The high–contrast, high–resolution XGA OLED Tru–FinderTM provides high visibility, fine details even in dark areas, accurate colors and smooth displays at either 60fps or 120fps, with the framerate selectable for smoother viewing. Standard and high–quality settings are available for both the viewfinder and the LCD monitor.

The camera's eight keys and controls can be custom–assigned to any of 89 shooting and replay functions, and frequently used functions can also be assigned to the control dial and control wheel with My Dial. My Menu allows flexible assignment of 30 menu items, and the custom settings screen helps keep track of everything. Help displays are available on the menu screen via a single button.

User–interface improvements for efficient settings control

A new feature displays frequently used ISO ranges on the ISO setting screen, and another displays frequently used focus–area types on the AF area–setting screen. And when using Flexible Spot mode you can now cycle the AF area up, down, right and left – useful when shooting sporting scenes where the subject moves frequently within the AF area.

Greater control over white balance settings

If set in advance, auto white balance can now be locked or unlocked at any time, for more consistent color tones when there are multiple light sources. Custom setting of white balance has been simplified, and you can now select an AWB priority setting when shooting with incandescent lighting – either warmer Atmosphere Priority, or White Priority for purer whites.

When shooting with compatible wireless flash units, rear–curtain sync24 and slow sync can now be selected, increasing your creative options for lighting.

Easier ratings and protection from deletion

Still images can be given a rating or protected from deletion, and both functions can be accessed via pre–assigned custom keys.

When doing remote shooting using the Remote app from the Imaging Edge desktop applications, you can now use the overlay display to make precise adjustments to focus and composition while checking the live view on your PC screen.

The One–touch remote feature turns your mobile device into a viewfinder and remote control, while One–touch sharing allows photos and videos to be transferred to your device for social media sharing. The camera can also acquire location data via Bluetooth®25. (These mobile device features are available via Sony's Imaging Edge Mobile app26.)

The camera's low–vibration shutter mechanism is designed and tested to withstand around 200,000 shutter cycles27, and the body, top cover and front cover use a light but highly rigid magnesium alloy. Major buttons and dials are sealed, and casing components have an interlocked double–layer structure to resist dust and moisture28.

Advanced Real-time Eye AF, humans and animals

Advanced “Real-time Eye AF6” employs (Ai) artificial intelligence, including machine learning, to detect and process eye data in real time, resulting in improved accuracy, speed and tracking performance of Eye AF. Eye AF can be employed for humans, animals and when recording movie. With a half press of the shutter button, the camera can automatically detect the eyes of the subject and activate Eye AF in all autofocus modes. When in either AF-C or AF-A mode, eye capture is continuously maintained. Additionally, the preferred eye (right or left) of your subject can be selected as the focus point. Choices include Auto/Right Eye/Left Eye, and a Switch Right/Left Eye function is assignable to a custom function or the touchscreen panel.

“Real-time Tracking” is a state-of-the-art feature that utilizes a special object recognition algorithm that processes color, subject distance (depth), brightness (pattern) as spatial information, plus AI (Artificial Intelligence with machine learning) information including face and eye location, ensuring that all subjects can be captured with extreme accuracy and precision. This can be activated by a simple half press of the shutter button, or can be assigned to a custom function as well.  The subject to be tracked can also be specified by touching it on the monitor when the Touch Tracking function is engaged.

Advanced AI-based subject recognition technology now allows fast, precise, automatic detection and tracking of animal eyes. This new capability can vastly increase success rates when photographing animals in a variety of settings or pets at home. Real-time Eye AF animal mode can be initiated either by pressing an assigned custom button or by half-pressing the shutter button.

Image sensor output is processed in 16-bit form by the front-end LSI and BIONZ X image processing engine before being output as compressed or uncompressed 14-bit RAW files that have smoother, more natural gradations for higher overall image quality. 14-bit RAW output is available even when shooting in silent or continuous mode.

This can be an advantage for weddings or documentaries, where there is only one chance to capture a scene. In such cases the focus area selected in advance is applied.

Make operation more intuitive, quick and easy. You can assign any of 89 functions to any of 8 custom buttons. The My Menu function allows up to 30 frequently-used menu items to be registered. BIONZ X processing maximizes sensor potential

Advanced Detail Reproduction Technology and Area-specific Noise Reduction - both features of Sony’s BIONZ X image processing engine - have been carefully tuned to maximize the performance of a sensor that offers approximately 1.5 times more resolution than the highly acclaimed Alpha 7R III, achieving extremely fine, realistic reproduction of textures and details.

A standard ISO range that extends from ISO 100 up to ISO 32000 with undiminished quality is expandable to ISO 50 to ISO 102400 for still images, make it possible to achieve optimum image quality in just about any light. Noise is effectively minimized even at high sensitivities, maintaining excellent image quality even with this sensor’s high pixel count.

Serious speed up to 10fps with AF/AE tracking

An advanced mechanical shutter unit and updated image processing algorithms allow the innovative new full-frame Alpha 7R IV to shoot full 61MP resolution images at up to 10 fps with continuous and accurate autofocus and auto exposure (AF/AE) tracking for up to approximately seven seconds in JPEG and RAW, and approx. three times as long in 26.2MPii APS-C crop mode. These high-speed options ensure that fast moving subjects can be captured with extreme accuracy and incredible image detail.

4D FOCUS – Wide, fast, reliable AF gets the shot

The new image sensor in the Alpha 7R IV features 567 phase detection points in a high-density focal plane phase-detection AF system, covering approximately 99.7% of the image area vertically and 74.0% horizontally. High-density focal plane phase-detection works with 425 contrast AF points in a Fast Hybrid AF system that can handle a huge volume of data at high speed, snapping rapidly into focus with just about any subject and situation. Tracking performance has been improved too, despite the significant increase in resolution.

Real-time Tracking is a state-of-the-art feature that employs artificial intelligence to tenaciously track moving subjects when shooting stills or movies. Accurate focus is maintained automatically while the shutter button is half-pressed. The subject to be tracked can also be specified by touching it on the monitor when the Touch Tracking function is engaged. An advanced subject recognition algorithm uses color, pattern (brightness), and subject distance (depth) data to process spatial information in real time. If the subject is a person, AI is used to detect and keep track of the subject’s eye and face in real time for extremely high tracking precision. The focus area will seamlessly change between face and eye according to the condition of the subject.

Real-time Eye AF employs artificial intelligence to detect and process eye data in real time, and track the subject’s eye with unprecedented precision. This function can be activated via an assigned custom key, or by simply pressing the AF-ON button or half-pressing the shutter button. When used with the Real-time Tracking function, tracking will continue even if the camera is temporarily unable to locate the subject’s eye, so it is easier than ever to shoot dynamic portraits of moving subjects. In addition to automatic eye selection when using Eye AF, it is also possible to manually preselect the subject’s right or left eye.

The Alpha 7R IV debuts Real-time Eye AF for movie shooting, a first in any of Sony’s cameras. When activated, human eyes are automatically identified and precisely tracked with high precision and reliability, allowing the shooter to focus on the content itself as opposed to what is in focus or not. The same Touch Tracking functionality that is provided for stills is also available for movie shooting, easily initiating Real-time Eye AF tracking on a specified eye. Right/left eye selection is available for movies too.

The shutter unit assembly has been carefully re-designed to reduce even the slightest movement that may cause blur, which is critical with high resolution sensors. Shutter vibration that can cause blur is reduced to a minimum, even when shooting continuous bursts at up to 10 frames per second, thanks to a new shutter unit with a fast-response coreless motor. The system also includes a brake that subdues mechanical front and rear curtain shutter vibration, and dampers that absorb mechanical shock. Low shutter vibration is critical to achieving full quality from the camera’s high-resolution image sensor. The shutter is also quiet, and has been tested for durability in excess of 500,000 shutter cycles.

In addition to the mechanical shutter, the Alpha 7R IV has an electronic shutter that operates without moving parts for silent, vibration-free shooting. This also makes it easier to elicit maximum performance from the camera’s high-resolution sensor.

A precision stabilization unit and gyro sensors work with refined image stabilization algorithms to achieve up to a 5.5-step shutter speed advantage that also supports the high-resolution capabilities of the 61-megapixel sensor. Camera shake is effectively compensated on 5 axes: pitch and yaw, X and Y shift and roll. The live view image is also stabilized while shooting stills, making it easier to frame and focus when using a telephoto or macro lens. In-body image stabilization means that effective stabilization can be achieved with a wide range of lenses. 5-axis image stabilization is effective for movies as well as stills.

The Alpha 7R IV boasts a 5.76 million dot UXGA OLED Tru-finder EVF - Sony’s highest resolution viewfinder ever - at about 1.6x the resolution of the EVF in the Alpha 7R III. This new viewfinder provides an extremely accurate, true-to-life depiction of the scene being framed. The display quality can be set to ‘Standard’ or ‘High’ mode, and to either 60 fps or 120 fps refresh rate that provides a smooth viewfinder image with minimum display motion blur when shooting moving subjects. The eyepiece window is fluorine coated to repel fingerprints and grime, and make it easier to clean.

When even higher resolution is needed, Pixel Shift Multi Shooting takes advantage of the advanced in-body image stabilization system to capture multiple pixel-shifted images that are later composited using Sony’s “Imaging Edge™” desktop application to achieve overwhelming resolution in a single image. In addition to 4-image composites, the Alpha 7R IV is capable of producing 16-image composites with approximately 240.8 million pixels (19008 x 12672 pixels) from data that is equivalent to approximately 963.2 million pixels. The result is photographs with detail and presence that are simply stunning. Resolution, color, and material textures are astonishingly realistic even when the image is enlarged by more than 100% and ideal for photographing architecture, art or any other still life subject.

In addition to its impressive still image capabilities, the new Alpha 7R IV performs exceptionally well as a serious filmmaking tool, offering 4K (3840x2160 pixels) video recording across the full width of the image sensor, and full pixel readout without pixel binning in Super 35mm mode. This ensures high quality 4K footage with exceptional detail and depth. S-Log 2 and S-Log 3 are also available to maximize color grading flexibility, with S-Log 3 offering a total of 14-stops of dynamic range. HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) is available on the Alpha 7R IV as well to support an Instant HDR workflow.

Wireless tethering (PC Remote for Professional Workflow

Wireless connectivity and PC Remote shooting let the photographer move around with fewer restrictions for a smoother, more efficient setup and workflow. The ability to connect the camera and computer via 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz Wi-Fi provides the versatility, reliability, and speed needed to transfer image data to the computer while shooting images in continuous mode. With the camera and computer connected using Sony’s Imaging Edge “Remote” software application (Ver. 2.0 or later), it is easier than ever to shoot, change camera settings, and transfer and store still images. In addition to wirelessly connecting the camera directly to the computer, the connection can be made via a wireless access point for compatibility with a variety of network environments.

In addition to high speed Wi-Fi® and wireless PC connectivity, the Alpha 7R IV is equipped with a SuperSpeed USB (USB 3.2 Gen 1) USB Type-C™ connector that supports extremely fast wired data transmission, with almost doubled data transfer speed achieved in combination with Sony’s Imaging Edge software (compared to the Alpha 7R III), plus FTP data transfer with background transfer capability, allowing images to be sent to a specified FTP remote server while the photographer is still shooting or reviewing images.

Thanks to the a9 II’s incredible speed, continuous shooting is possible at up to 20fps with the electronic shutter and 10fps with the mechanical shutter, to capture fast-moving subjects with either shutter mode, and even at its highest speed, the flash can be synchronized with the mechanical shutter.

High-Speed 1/32000 sec Anti-Distortion Shutter

4D FOCUS: From AF Wide Coverage, Speed, and Tracking Stability

4D FOCUS means highly accurate subject detection, reliable rapid autofocusing, and continuous tracking of subjects in motion, based on uninterrupted AF and an optimized AF algorithm as well as the approximately 93% AF coverage from 693 focal-plane phase-detection AF points that track random subject motion even during shutter release.

Flicker from fluorescent and other artificial lighting is automatically detected and shutter action is timed to minimize the effect of flicker on still images. This suppresses exposure and color anomalies at the top and bottom of images shot at high shutter speeds, as well as exposure and color inconsistency between continuous shots, so you can take images indoors with more confidence. The Real-time Tracking technology uses AI to detect moving subjects from the wealth of information captured by the image sensor. Spatial data consisting of color, pattern (brightness) and distance information are processed in parallel at high speed, and human and animal face and eye location data are detected continuously in real time using AI, realizing high-accuracy with automatic detection and tracking performance for moving subjects.

Precision AF Effective Down to EV-3 Brightness

Low-light AF detection extends to EV-3 at ISO 100. The Focus Priority in Aperture Drive option enables more accurate focusing in dim lighting and when the aperture is stopped down with the result that the precision AF system will function properly even when shooting dimly lit scenes. This opens up new possibilities in low-light and night shooting.

Real-time Eye AF relies on advanced AI to continuously analyze and detect eyes from the image sensor’s copious data, with left or right eye preference possible with a simple toggle. By half-pressing the shutter button, even animal eyes are detected. Team it up with Real-time Tracking for superior tracking performance of live subjects.

AF/AE-tracking continuous shooting with A-mount lenses

The body’s 693-point focal-plane phase-detection AF provides wide-area coverage, fast response, and high tracking performance, not only for E-mount but also for A-mount lenses with use of a mount adaptor (LA-EA3). Continuous shooting of up to 10fps with AF tracking is possible.

Shutter Durability and Image Shake Suppression

The shutter has been tested for durability in excess of 500,000 shutter-release cycles and incorporates an internal damper structure to absorb the impact of shutter motion for minimum shutter vibration and noise, helping to also realize more sharply resolved imaging.

Body-Integrated 5-Axis Optical Image Stabilization

The body-integrated image stabilization system is fine-tuned to compensate accurately for 5-axis camera shake that can compromise handheld shooting. This gives you extremely high performance in both stills and movies, whether shooting at longer focal lengths, in close-ups, or at night. It is equivalent to using a 5.5-step faster shutter speed, allowing stable determination of composition when capturing subjects in high-speed motion. Real-time effects can be monitored via live view. User-Selectable Focus Area Circulation and Customization

A new setting allows the focus area to be rotated through the upper, lower, left, and right edges of the frame to select an appropriate focus area for sports or other situations where the subject frequently moves through the frame. AF area and ISO display limiting makes it possible to display only the most frequently used focus area and ISO settings for quicker, easier selection for faster, more efficient shooting.

The a9 II employs the large-capacity NP-FZ100 battery and a highly energy-efficient circuit design to double operation longevity to professional session lengths. The robust VG-C4EM vertical-position grip is available for greater operability and even longer hours of shooting. In addition to other optional accessories, USB Type-C™ and Multi/Micro USB ports allow external mobile batteries to power the camera for further extended recording.

The a9 II provides two media slots for SD cards, both SLOT 1 and SLOT 2 are now compatible with UHS-I and UHS-II for fast mass-volume data writing. Two cards in the slots can be used to simultaneously record or relay record data separate RAW data from JPEG data, or stills from movies, and copy data from one card to the other. A slide lock structure prevents the memory card cover from being opened unintentionally.

Reliable Durability and Weather Resistance in Tough Situations

The a9 II brings you further enhanced body durability, with full use of lightweight, high-rigidity magnesium alloy for covers and internal frame, keeping the camera highly rigid and light. In response to pro opinions, enhanced sealing is applied to the battery cover, terminal cover and all joints in the chassis. A double-sealed sliding mechanism replaces the hinge of the media compartment lid for better moisture resistance. Routes to dust and moisture entry have been re-examined, and a cushion around the lens mount has been added to ensure reliable operation in challenging environments.

The a9 II brings higher efficiency to work delivery tasks with a new Voice Memo function that allows you to record up to 60-sec audio files (.wav) describing shooting conditions or image content with automatic transcription into text, which is then attached to images.
